Think you can’t meditate?

Think you can’t meditate? Think again!

Busting the myths of meditation

“I can’t switch my mind off.”
“I can’t empty my mind.”

These are two common phrases and misunderstandings that I often hear in the world of yoga and meditation.

It’s such a common mistake to think that we need to have empty or switched off minds in order to meditate ‘successfully’. It’s certainly a mistake that I’ve made myself over the years. I tried to find a meditation or mindfulness practice to suit me, but always found it such a difficult thing to do. My mind was whirring all the time; I couldn’t control my monkey mind as there was so much going on.

Struggling to meditate regularly

When life became tricky, I would turn to meditation to help manage stress and anxiety. But then I’d give it up as soon as I got my life back on track. I tried all sorts of different styles on and off, but never managed to stick with it. Of course, Yin yoga is a deeply meditative experience, so I was comfortable that by practising Yin I was achieving similar benefits to sitting meditation.

When SPACE Yoga was launched in the middle of 2020, I felt I ‘ought’ to have a meditation practice in order to be an authentic yoga teacher. I felt a bit embarrassed to say I didn’t ‘meditate’!

Discovering an easier way to meditate

One day, a friend recommended a meditation teacher training course during the pandemic, so I decided to have another go. This is when I discovered Instinctive Meditation® and it’s been a part of my life ever since.

There are so many ways we can find a meditative moment that doesn’t require sitting cross-legged for long periods of time. This is the key to Instinctive Meditation. Anyone can do it and it’s an inbuilt, natural mechanism to combat stress that we just need to tap into, to be guided to; there’s no learning or discipline as it’s within us all. There’s no right way or wrong way; only your way.

What is Instinctive Meditation?

Instinctive Meditation is a style of meditation developed by Lorin Roche. It’s founded on the idea that meditation is an intuitive practice, and that each individual has their own unique meditation style that can be discovered and developed.

Unlike traditional guided meditations that require you to follow a specific set of instructions, Instinctive Meditation encourages you to tap into your natural instincts and allow your body and mind to guide you in the meditation process. The practice can be tailored to suit your unique needs and preferences, such as incorporating movement, sound or breathwork to deepen the meditative experience.

Instinctive Meditation can be practised alone, with a group or with a meditation partner, allowing for a flexible and adaptable practice that fits into your lifestyle. This style of meditation is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike, as it’s tailored to each individual’s unique experience and preferences.

The benefits of Instinctive Meditation
